The Pedal Fiend's Choice

My love for effects pedals is well-documented. I've always been drawn to the endless possibilities of sculpting sound, experimenting with textures and creating unique sonic landscapes. Gear Acquisition Syndrome is a real thing for guitarists, and I'm definitely no exception.

The question often arises: could I play an entire gig with only one pedal? The answer is a resounding yes. While I could play with no pedals at all (à la Wilco Johnson!), the real challenge is choosing the right single pedal for such a diverse set.

After much deliberation, I'd choose a single pedal that's proven its versatility over the years: the Electro Harmonix Holy Stain.

Unboxing and Initial Impressions

This isn't my first Holy Stain; I used one extensively in the early 2010s with my band, Secrets of September. This one's brand new, though – a welcome replacement for my well-loved, second-hand original.

The packaging is simple, but it contains everything you need: the pedal, power supply (noticeably larger than previous EH supplies), and a small instruction manual (which, let's be honest, is optional!).

Sound Demo: Clean Tones

For this demo, I'm using my Gretsch Streamliner 420T – a versatile and enjoyable guitar. I've made a few modifications, including the bridge and knobs, to better suit my playing style.

Let's start with the clean tones. The Holy Stain offers a range of effects: room reverb, whole reverb, pitch shift, and tremolo. The reverb is exceptionally good, with a lush, studio-quality sound that adds depth and dimension to the clean tone.

The pitch shift provides a nice chorus effect when centered, and a more dramatic pitch-shifting effect when dialed in further. The tremolo creates dynamic rhythmic pulsations. Each effect is well-implemented and easy to control.

Sound Demo: Overdrive and Fuzz

Now let's explore the overdrive and fuzz capabilities. The Holy Stain has a master volume, tone control, and distortion control, allowing for a wide range of sounds from subtle overdrive to thick, fuzzy tones.

The fuzz is particularly impressive, offering a vintage-style sound with plenty of bite. The combination of fuzz and reverb creates a thick, textured sound perfect for solos or atmospheric passages.

The expression pedal input adds another layer of control, allowing for dynamic manipulation of the effects in real-time (though I don't have an expression pedal for this demonstration).

Final Verdict

The Electro Harmonix Holy Stain is a highly versatile pedal. The clean tone effects are outstanding, and the overdrive and fuzz sounds are rich and powerful.

While a drive on/off switch would make it even better, the Holy Stain offers exceptional value for its price point. The range of high-quality sounds makes this pedal an ideal choice for gigging and recording.
